Coach of the Year

2019 Coach of the Year
Josie Ferri Tomaino
Episcopal Academy

In just 6 years, Josie has accumulated some staggering statistics and achievements. She has led her program to a 118-26 overall record, and a 65-7 Inter-Ac league record. In 6 years, her team has won 4 league championships, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and the PAISA (Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Associations) State Championship in 2016.

Josie has been a champion for many of her players.  She has coached a PASLA Rookie of the Year, 2 Delco Sports Hall of Fame recipients, 3 League MVP’s, 3 Jackie Pitts recipients, 11 US Lacrosse All-Americans, 16 US Lacrosse All-Academics, 36 All-League Players, and has had 30 committed college players.

Josie’s influence extends off the field as well, she is the Vice President of PASLA, Co-Owner of Philly Blast, a board member for Harlem Lacrosse, a featured presenter at the US Lacrosse Convention, the Owner/director of the Philly Women’s’ Lacrosse summer league, and a committee member for Shootout for Soldiers Philadelphia.

The numbers are impressive, and speak for themselves, but Josie’s impact goes well beyond the championships and awards. In the words of a current player, “Coach Ferri always puts the team first and is a coach that embodies the mentality, “play for the team on the front of your jersey and not the number on the back”.

The Episcopal Academy athletic director shared this, “Josie is a terrific lacrosse coach. She is knowledgeable, highly organized, and passionate about the sport. Her attention to detail and progressive practice plans provide an excellent training experience for her team. I am especially grateful for the time she spends focusing on the other very important life lessons such as teamwork, selflessness, work ethic, character development, and leadership. She is a gifted coach, a worthy recipient, and she will be humbled to receive this meaningful award”.

From a current senior on her team, “Coach Ferri is such an amazing coach and role model. She fosters a supportive environment for all players and inspires everyone through her motivating speeches. I will miss playing for such an outstanding coach. She pushed me every day to do my best and inspired me to be the best player I could be”.

And finally, from 2 former players, “Coach Ferri has a genuine excitement when it comes to her team’s being successful. Her coaching style is strategic and energizing, and you can’t help get fired up with her on the sideline. But she is not only a great coach, but she is a mentor and an unbelievable life resource, that we were lucky to have”.

Congratulations to PASLA Coach of the Year – Josie Ferri Tomaino!
